At the end of every year, the design world waits with bated breath to find out what the new colour trends will be for the next year. The Pantone Colour Institute set this up in 2000 as a way to steer new trends for all the creative fields. For 2021 they have chosen two: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating – a classic mid grey and a vibrant yellow.
Contrary to Pantone’s predictions, two of the biggest paint companies in the UK have also made their colour predictions for the world of interior design and it is no surprise to us that the shades of nature and earthy tones feature prominently. In all elements of design, this trend pervades, illustrated in the massive trend for botanical designs in fabrics, wallpapers, artwork and houseplants and having been confined to our homes for so long, bringing the natural world and its soothing palette inside, is comforting and connects us with our planet.

Dulux’s choice, Brave Ground, is a warm neutral shade, which combines fabulously with bolder colours as well as other neutral tones. This image is a perfect example of how we have used a similar palette to create a relaxed and harmonious bedroom. See more of this project here.
Farrow & Ball, on the other hand, have chosen 12 shades which include tones of the earth and woodland around us. They have been chosen “to convey a sense of ease and familiarity” and once again exhibit the move towards warm earthly, organic shades.
