Meet the Interior Designer

Becky Astley

Lead Design Project Manager

When you choose Clayton and Company for your project, you’re not just selecting a design firm.  You choose to work with us because you value the expertise and creativity of our designers. That’s why we’re eager to showcase our team—to provide you with a glimpse of the individuals you’re investing in.

Meet Becky, one of our Lead Design Project Managers, who has been an integral part of Clayton and Company for the past 13 years. With a wealth of experience as an established interior designer, she has contributed to projects spanning the UK, from boutique hotels to striking show homes. Becky possesses a keen eye for detail and thrives on challenges, making her an invaluable asset to our team.

“Interior design appealed to me for the daily creativity it brings and seeing my ideas become a carefully curated space. I feel fortunate to be able to follow my passion for design in a job that I love!”

How did you get started in interior design?

I began my career in hotel interior design after studying Art History and Historic Building Conservation at University.  A gap year as a hotel receptionist led to a remarkable opportunity to collaborate with the in-house designer for the Von Essen Hotel Group, working on projects for 24 stunning country house hotels. Two years later, I joined Clayton and Company, where I’ve been for the past 13 years. Time truly flies!

How would you describe your interior design style?

I like the work of designer Kit Kemp who uses playful colour combinations and fun patterns and textures.  I took inspiration from her work for the Firmdale Hotel group and you can see elements of this in my designs for the Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa in Bath.  On the other hand, I also like the style of Studio McGee with neutral interiors with lots of wood textures and clean lines.

How do you begin a project?  Where do you find inspiration?

My design might be based around a key statement artwork or furniture piece so I like to zone in on this right away. Also, I really enjoy flicking through the latest fabric collections and love a good scroll through Pinterest – I find it to be a great starting point and it also keeps me up to date with the latest trends. It’s important for me to introduce memorable pieces and layer my designs with colour and texture. Bold colour palettes always capture my attention as they create depth to an interior.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

As Lead Designer, I love supporting my team, especially when it comes to design support. For example, I’m really hands on with all of my projects from start to finish, from liaising with site teams and architects to collaborating with our upholstery and fitting teams. In addition to this, we have monthly design meetings where we discuss new suppliers and love to give each other inspiration. Of course, there’s also the not-so-glamorous side of admin and invoicing—less thrilling, but all part of the design journey!

Can you pinpoint any particular milestones in your career?

Working as the Lead Designer of 12 principal suites at the Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa was a particular milestone as I really enjoy hotel interior design projects. This was a year long project which meant I built a good relationship with the hotel team.  The challenge of incorporating the existing antiques was particularly enjoyable for me and I also learnt new skills on how to dress four poster beds with a contemporary approach.  Above all, I really had to acknowledge the the importance of proportionality and scale when it comes to furniture in larger spaces!

What are your goals for the future as an interior designer?

I’m always looking to develop myself and come up with new creative design ideas. I would like to take more time to visit inspirational design shows and informative talks by other designers to broaden my knowledge. There is always more to learn and that really excites me!
