Meet the Design Assistant

Natasha Milosevic

When you choose Clayton & Company for your project, you’re not just selecting a design firm. You decide to work with us because you value the expertise and creativity of our designers. That’s why we’re eager to give you a chance to get to know the team you’re investing in.

Meet Natasha, one of our Interior Design Assistants, who has joined Clayton & Company for her 12 month professional placement from Bath Spa University. Read on to find out about her time with us so far, what’s she learnt, and what her future plans are…

What and where are you currently studying?

I’m studying Interior Design at Bath Spa University.

What inspired you to pursue interior design?

I’ve always been creative and loved subjects like art and textiles at school. I’m constantly rearranging my bedroom and choosing new colours to paint the walls – and my dream has always been to one day buy and design my own home. Interior design just felt like a natural fit, and I’ve honestly loved every minute of it so far.

How did you secure your placement?

Clayton & Company wasn’t advertising a placement, but I found a phone number, gave them a call, and ended up sending my CV and cover letter across. I was invited for an interview and the rest is history!

What does a typical day look like for you at Clayton & Company? What are your main roles and responsibilities?

Every day looks a little different depending on who I’m working with, which I love – it keeps things interesting and I never get bored! My main responsibilities are preparing and pasting presentation boards, ordering furniture, bay checking in styling, helping to prepare for site, and keeping an eye on stock levels of everything from light bulbs to stationery.

“I’m not treated like just a placement student, but as a valued member of the team. I receive a lot of support and everyone takes the time to explain things I’m struggling with. At the same time, I feel trusted, as I’ve been given more and more responsibility.”

What’s been your favourite experience or task so far?

I really enjoy putting together scheme boards. It’s great getting a sneak peek at everyone’s designs before they’re finalised and installed and I have the opportunity to choose paint colours and fabrics, which makes me feel really involved in a project.

I also love going on site and seeing the designs come to life, especially when I’ve been involved from the beginning. Our projects move quickly, so I get to experience the whole process from concept to installation, which is quite rare for a design assistant.

What’s your favourite Clayton & Company project, and why?

I really enjoyed working on and installing Hollymead Square for Hill with Ash. The house was quite big so it was a challenge, but we always pull together as a team and get it done. I love working with Ash because her style is really similar to mine, and I get a lot of inspiration from her.

Has anything surprised your about the role?

It’s actually been better than I expected! I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I didn’t think I’d be this involved in so many aspects of the work. I’m learning so much.

Any key lessons or advice for future placement students or design assistants?

Write everything down – you think you’ll remember, but you probably won’t! It’s better to be safe than sorry!

When applying for placements, be persistent. Follow up on your emails, and don’t be afraid to call the company to ask for the best contact to send your CV to. Do your research so you can tailor your application and come across more confidently in the interview.

How would you describe your personal interiors style?

I love Scandinavian design and biophilic elements (bringing the outside in). I’m drawn to light and airy spaces with neutral colours and greenery. I also like using natural textures like wood or brick, and adding pops of colour or pattern through soft furnishings like curtains, rugs or cushions. It keeps things fresh but still cohesive, and it’s easy to change the look.

What are your long-term career goals or aspirations?

At the moment I’m just taking it one step at a time. I’m not sure where I will end up, but my time at Clayton & Company has been so valuable I definitely feel like I’m heading in the right direction.
