If you’re looking for tips on how to create a space for hunkering down, look no further; our designers have put together six tips to create the perfect sanctuary.
Introduce autumnal colours
Nothing says Autumn like a tonal colour palette that takes inspiration from nature. Think earthy browns, forest greens, and soft sunset oranges. To contrast, add pops of brighter jewel tones or lean into darker colours such as deep blues. A multi-coloured wool blanket is the perfect accessory if you’re into bright colours.
Layers, layers, layers
Just as you layer your clothes at this time of year, layer your textiles with knitted throws, woven blankets, and warm boucle fabrics in warm ochre and rust tones. They will not only create a warm aesthetic, but they will also keep you warm and cosy while binge-watching the latest Netflix series on the sofa.
Add dried flowers
Dried flower arrangements are the perfect low maintenance and sustainable option to add florals to your home in winter. Brave the cold and head into the garden to cut some stems and branches and place them in a large vase. Tall grasses or large flower heads such as hydrangeas are a great option. Or for a spookier feel, try grouping some gourds in a bowl or on a tactile wooden tray.
Lots of lighting
As the days get shorter, it’s important to introduce more light into your home. To create atmosphere and warmth add a table lamp with a soft shade for low-level lighting, or if you need task lighting for reading, a moveable floor lamp works well. A decorative ceiling pendant with a diffused light is great for a central feature when paired with a small glass lamp for extra cosiness.
Find a fragrance
Aromatics such as amber, sandalwood, bergamot, cedarwood, and cinnamon are perfect scents to inspire an autumnal feel. Light your favourite candles and snuggle up.
Pick a pattern
Continuing the theme of bringing the outside in and taking influence from Mother Nature, if you’re looking to add autumnal patterns into your home for the season, look to leafy, woodland designs. Sanderson and Morris & Co has some inspiring wallpaper patterns, and Warner House has some equally lovely choices.
Organic patterns in a calm green or neutral tone work well with natural wooden furniture pieces.
